Dr. Merfeld

Dr. Stephen J. Merfeld has proudly served the families of northeastern Wisconsin for nearly the past 30 years. As a 1986 graduate of the University of Iowa College of Medicine, Dr. Merfeld completed a residency in ophthalmology at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, MI in 1990 during which he served as Chief Resident of the department. Following this, Dr. Merfeld served as Head of the Department of Ophthalmology with the United States Navy both in Bremerton, WA as well as Yokosuka, Japan. During the two years he served in Japan, he was responsible for providing eye care for the Pacific Fleet from Korea to the Philippines. In 1993, Dr. Merfeld entered private practice in the Oshkosh area and now has offices in Oshkosh, Berlin, Waupaca and Fond du Lac.

As a board certified ophthalmologist, Dr. Merfeld specializes in laser and microsurgical procedures of the face and eye. He is an accomplished surgeon, having performed tens-of-thousands of ocular procedures using the most advanced techniques. These include procedures to correct both cosmetic and functional defects of the face and eyelids, as well as medical and cosmetic Botox® injections. Dr. Merfeld provides medical, laser and surgical care for a broad range of ocular conditions ranging from glaucoma and macular degeneration to diabetes and cataract.

Dr. Merfeld, as part of the Northeast Wisconsin Vision Center team, helped pioneer “No-drop” cataract surgery and was among the first in Wisconsin to bring this technique into mainstream medicine. By doing so, he was able to add this advancement to the available menu of options that he was already offering his patients such as “No-stitch,” “No-shot” and premium lens implant (e.g. bifocal, toric) surgery.

Living in the Oshkosh area, Dr. Merfeld and his family have enjoyed the many recreational opportunities available in the area such as boating, snowmobiling, and gardening. He especially enjoys growing giant pumpkins with his grandson.

Retired as of January 1st 2023.
