Dr. Stephen J. Merfeld graduated from the University of Iowa College of Medicine in Iowa City, Iowa in 1986. During his ophthalmology residency training at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan which he completed in 1990, he was selected as Chief Resident of the department. Following residency, Dr. Merfeld served as Head of the Department of Ophthalmology with the United States Navy both in Bremerton, Washington as well as Yokosuka, Japan. During the two years he served in Japan, he was responsible for providing eye care for the Pacific Fleet from Korea to the Philippines. In 1993, Dr. Merfeld entered private practice in the Oshkosh area and now has offices in Oshkosh, Berlin and Waupaca.

As a board certified ophthalmologist, Dr. Merfeld specializes in microsurgery of the eye. He is an accomplished surgeon, having performed thousands of ocular surgical procedures using the most modern techniques. He has performed thousands of laser procedures and is trained in the use of the argon laser, YAG laser, CO2 laser, dye laser, and excimer laser. These lasers are used by Dr. Merfeld to perform a broad range of ocular surgeries from glaucoma and diabetic procedures to vision correction of both nearsightedness and farsightedness.

Dr. Merfeld has been an active participant in the evolution of vision correction procedures. He is a pioneer in modern corneal flap procedures in northeast Wisconsin having performed the first automated lamellar surgery (ALK) for the correction of myopia and hyperopia. This technology has since become the foundation of LASIK.

Dr. Merfeld believes so strongly in laser vision correction that he has had laser correction himself. He had PRK performed on his right eye and LASIK on his left, making him uniquely qualified to discuss these corrective options with his patients.

Living in the Oshkosh area, Dr. Merfeld and his family enjoy the many recreational opportunities available. Being involved in such activities as boating, skiing, flying and scuba diving, his enjoyment of these has been greatly enhanced since having laser vision correction himself.
